Polo Instruction

When?

Where?

This summer, we're located in Barn "B" of the Sarasota Polo Club. Look for us on Polo Club Lane, near the clubhouse. Lessons are in the new arena.

How much?

Do I need to know how to ride a horse?

Yes. Polo requires advanced riding skills. Formal English riding lessons are a prerequisite. If you want to learn how to ride, please contact us for a list of riding instructors in your area.

What if I have previous polo experience?

Our group polo lessons are for beginner-to-intermediate polo students.

If you are a Player Member of the United States Polo Association and rated "B" (-1) or higher, then you are too advanced for Polo School. You're ready to join the Arena League.

If you're unsure of your current rating, take a private lesson and we will evaluate you.  purchase

What equipment do I need?

At first, all you need is a riding hat and boots or chaps. No sneakers. We will loan you everything else you need to get started.

May I use a Western saddle?

No. Sorry, but we only use English saddles.

Do I need to own a horse?

Not at first, but you will need to purchase at least one horse when you graduate from the Polo School to the Polo Club.

How long does it take to learn how to play polo?

It takes most people at least one full season (3 months) to attain a "B" (-1) handicap. At that point you will graduate from the Polo School to the Polo Club.

May I use my own horse?

Yes, but only if it is a trained polo pony.

Can anyone come and watch my polo lessons?

Yes. Many of our students come with family and friends.

May I bring my dog with me?

Yes.  But your dog must be leashed at all times.

Is membership in the USPA Required?

Yes. A Student Membership in the USPA® is required if you decide to take more than one polo lesson. The cost is $35. application
